That is the competition America now faces with China.

For decades, American strategy has rested on an understandable assumption: Military superiority helps preserve global leadership. It deters adversaries, reassures allies, and remains indispensable to American power.

But China is not the Soviet Union.

Beijing is competing across a much broader field — technology, industry, finance, education, infrastructure, supply chains, and scientific capability, alongside military power.

China does not have to defeat the U.S. on the battlefield.

It does not have to invade American territory.

It does not have to sink an aircraft carrier.

It only has to outperform America in enough areas that will shape the 21st century.
