Buckhorn Sports Pad is a happening place this winter season
The Buckhorn Sports Pad started in 2008 with an idea by Pete Clarkson. When Pete saw an outdoor rink in Cavendish with just the boards, he thought that Buckhorn needed one. That was the beginning.
It was taken first to community policing. They were for it. Then they found a location. Across from the school was perfect. The Buckhorn Community Centre, with Nancy Fairweather as president of the board, was in favour. The municipality was next.
In the fall of 2009, a Trillium grant was applied for and received for $100,000, and $15,000 from the municipality helped.
A Zamboni shed and a warm room was built. Sod was taken off the ice area and gravel was put down. Water was put on just the area that was prepped. All the work was done by volunteers, with Buckhorn Sand and Gravel being a major contributor.
In the summer of 2010, the cement pad was put down........
