Sorry, Mitch McConnell can’t come to the phone right now. Why? Because his cell died and he doesn’t have a charger? Because he’s focused on finishing today’s Washington Post “Sports” section? Beause he’s … well, you know?

It’s unclear! And the Kentucky senator’s colleagues don’t have a clue either. It’s now been 37 days since McConnell was hospitalized and two weeks since someone at least claimed to have spoken to the former majority leader.

A little over a week ago, McConnell did share a statement and proof-of-life photo. The senator said he was hospitalized on June 14 after a fall in his home left him “briefly unconscious.” Over the past few days, elected officials from both parties have called for more updates on McConnell’s condition, but he hasn’t shared a lick of new information.

During phase one of the McConnell health mystery, his spokesperson would only confirm that he was hospitalized on June 14 and “continues his recovery.” As morbid conspiracy theories swirled, three of McConnell’s colleagues and friends occasionally claimed they’d spoken to him on the phone. CNN pundit Scott Jennings posted this tweet that launched a thousand memes on July 7, but no one has said anything about speaking with McConnell since:

Phase two began on July 12, when McConnell put out a photo and health update hours after we learned that another Republican senator, Lindsey Graham, had died unexpectedly. The Kentuckian said he was moving from the hospital to a rehabilitation center and made it sound like doctors were still trying to determine the cause of his fall:

My doctors have confirmed that I didn’t break any bones or suffer a concussion. I didn’t have a heart attack or a stroke. I don’t have any tumors or hemorrhages. But I was briefly unconscious and was taken to the hospital. While receiving excellent care over the past several weeks, I’ve also had to deal with a mild case of pneumonia.I can assure you that I’ve been a good patient. At my age, I tend to do what my doctors tell me to do. I’ve submitted to every test they can think of to help figure out what caused this incident. And I’m continuing to do everything they........
