When Centurions sent Pattons to their graves
On September 1, the 1 Armoured Division commemorated the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Phillora in the Sialkot sector – one of the fiercest armoured engagements of the 1965 India-Pakistan war. Six decades later, Phillora remains etched in the memory of the Indian Army not merely as a contest between tanks, but as a story of bold leadership, professional skill and extraordinary courage in the face of formidable odds.
The Pakistani Patton tanks were, by the standards of the time, among the most advanced armoured fighting vehicles in the region. Their technological superiority had created an aura of invincibility. Yet at Phillora, Indian Centurions demonstrated a lesson that remains relevant even in an age of precision weapons, drones and artificial intelligence: technology can provide an advantage, but it is human skill, leadership and determination that ultimately convert capability into combat power.
That enduring legacy came alive at a commemorative so cial evening-cum-dinner organised by the Patiala Armoured Division. Among the most moving features of the gathering was the presence of octogenarian veterans – men who, as young officers and soldiers six decades ago, had faced those very Pattons across the battlefield. Their recollections were more than anecdotes. They were fragments of living history.
As the veterans spoke, often with the humour and flourish that come naturally to those who have spent a lifetime recounting extraordinary experiences, the events of 1965 seemed to acquire a new immediacy. For the younger officers present, this was history without the distance of a textbook. These were the men who had actually been there. It was particularly heartening to see young officers listening with such attention.
They were not merely paying courtesy to their seniors; they were engaging with a generation whose experiences remain relevant to the profession of arms.
