You may recall I talked about my plan to join a group trying the two-day, 240-and-a-bit-kilometre cycling event called a fondo on the Island a couple of weeks ago.
Well, bucket list item checked.
The organization was top notch. The weather wonderful. Ditto the post ride drinks – milk, I’m talking chocolate milk, honest, lots of chocolate milk, the drink of champions, and just-turned-69-year-old-cyclists.
“Would you like one of these?” asked the young woman with the encouraging smile at the finish of the second day’s 152-kilometre trek. The look on my face must have told her something.
“Here,” she said brightly, flashing a big smile and holding out two bottles of chocolate milk, “take two.”
I did, and downed them lickety-split.
They were both needed, and deserved. Because, you see, P.E.I. has hills. Lots of hills. Unrelenting hills. Especially when you start in Charlottetown and head along the coast past Cornwall to Victoria-by-the-Sea on the first day.
“Who picked this route?” I gasped at about the 27-km mark on the way to the chocolate shop in Victoria.
“Don’t know,”........
