OPINION | SHARON PRUITT: Arkansas is worth fighting for

After years of teaching high school, serving as counselor, then in administration, I learned that the students who leave the greatest impression aren’t always the loudest. They listen, think carefully, take their work seriously, and show up determined to do their best.

Hallie Shoffner was one of those students. I taught Hallie at Newport High School. I remember a serious, studious young woman who approached her education with purpose. She was thoughtful, even pensive, taking time to consider before speaking. Beneath that quiet demeanor was unmistakable determination.

She knew the value of hard work in the classroom and on the basketball court. Disciplined and competitive, she was willing to put in the effort to improve. She didn’t expect things to be handed to her.

Hallie came from a farming family in the Arkansas Delta about 10 miles from Newport, where hard work is a way of life. Farm families understand responsibility, sacrifice, and the reality that sometimes you can do everything right and still face circumstances beyond your control.

Our town is filled........
