Global Entry program restarts after shutdown pause
The Global Entry program is returning to service after being paused due to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shutdown.
“As DHS continually evaluates measures it can take amidst the Democrats’ continued shutdown of the department, DHS has reactivated Global Entry on March 11th at 5:00 AM ET,” a spokesperson for the department said in an email to The Hill.
The spokesperson also said DHS was “working hard to alleviate the disruptions to travelers caused by the Democrats’ shutdown.”
Under the Global Entry program, prescreened travelers arriving in the U.S. get to pass customs faster.
Last month, the U.S. Travel Association urged the Trump administration to bring back the Global Entry program following its suspension as DHS funding lapsed. The department said it halted Global Entry so it could “preserve limited funds and personnel.”
DHS has been at the center of controversy in American politics, with the department’s head, Kristi Noem, recently being fired and backlash against Trump’s immigration agenda surging after the fatal shootings of Alex Pretti and Renee Good in Minneapolis.
Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.), Trump’s next pick for DHS secretary, has foreshadowed changes in the operations at the department. However, he has also mostly supported the White House’s immigration moves.
