Trump wants the new Navy to…look older

President Trump wants to leave his fingerprints on the new fleet of U.S. Navy ships. 

Trump is said to have asked the Navy to consider moving multistory command center towers back toward the center of the aircraft carriers, an adjustment which would give the ships a more retro appearance, according to sources familiar with the matter. 

He also ordered the military to revert to steam-powered catapult systems rather than the newer electromagnetic technology on its Ford-class aircraft carriers.  

“He’s a marginally failed real estate developer with multiple bankruptcies. He shouldn’t be weighing in on systems, on aircraft carriers,” Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) said in an interview with MS NOW, pushing back on Trump’s demand. 

These aesthetic changes will be costly and inefficient, experts told The Hill’s Filip Timotija.  

Bryan Clark, a naval operations expert, saod the designers moved the island more from the middle of the carriers to the back of the vessel to carve out more space for fighter jets to move around on the flight deck. 

“So just like at an airport, right, where … everything gets jammed, you got a traffic jam. It slows … down the flight rates, and so by having more space, they’re able to move things around more quickly and generate flights more easily,” he said.
