Canada’s Carney backs Trump on Iran

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Saturday backed President Trump’s strikes on Iran aimed at preventing the country from obtaining a nuclear weapon and pushed to further curb the regime’s actions.

“Canada supports the United States acting to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and to prevent its regime from further threatening international peace and security,” Carney said in a statement.

“Canada’s position remains clear: the Islamic Republican of Iran is the principal source of instability and terror throughout the Middle East, has one of the world’s worst human rights records, and must never be allowed to obtain or develop nuclear weapons,” he added.

The statement backing Trump’s strikes comes as several European allies urge caution and call for deescalation in the Middle East. Leaders of France, Germany and the United Kingdom urged the U.S. to return to the negotiating table with Iran.

The support from Carney is also notable as Ottawa and Washington have repeatedly clashed during Trump’s first year back in office, with a rollercoaster relationship marked by sharp disagreements over trade and Trump’s steep tariffs.

Tensions escalated last month after Carney delivered a speech in Davos, Switzerland, in which he declared a “rupture” in the old world order.

Trump in his own speech said Canada “should be grateful to us” and declared “Canada lives because of the United States,” telling the prime minister to “remember that.”

After the president earlier this month threatened to block the opening of a major bridge between Detroit and Ontario, Carney said he had a “positive” conversation with Trump.

Carney on Saturday urged Canadians in Iran to shelter in place while calling for “the protection of all civilians in this conflict.”
