MAP: Some states see highest-ever diesel prices as gas averages near records
(NEXSTAR) – Oil prices have jumped again, as have prices at the pump. New data from AAA shows several states continue to draw closer to the record gas prices they saw in 2022, as diesel prices surpass records in half a dozen states.
The national average price for a gallon of regular gas surpassed $4 late last month, marking the first time the U.S. had crossed that threshold in roughly four years. As of Tuesday, AAA reports the national average sits at $4.14 a gallon.
While prices remain high, the national average is still well off from the record it reached in 2022. In mid-June that year, AAA data shows the U.S. reached $5.016 a gallon, more than 87 cents above the current national average.
Meanwhile, the average cost for a gallon of diesel is $5.646, 17 cents below the 2022 record price of $5.816 a gallon.
In some states, the record prices set in 2022 are inching much closer to reality – or have already fallen into the rearview.
