Dolly Rebecca Parton Dean stacked up a number of accomplishments in her 80 years on Earth. Her biggest claim to fame, however, isn’t that she’s the greatest country music artist of all time or that she’s easily the most generous woman East of the Mississippi. Parton’s biggest feat is that she stayed close with her parents, 11 siblings, and extended family despite her fame.

Parton was so close to her family that it was her nephew Bryan Seaver, her longtime head of security, who broke the news of her passing to the world.

“Dolly opened doors not just for me, but for her entire family to reach the potential we didn’t even know was possible,” Seaver explained.

That commitment to the ties that bind is the undisputed reason the Parton family was “entrusted with her legacy” and has pledged to “work diligently to ensure her spirit will live with us forever.” It’s also the reason that they didn’t leak or detail Parton’s “brief battle with cancer” to the media.

Across her seven-decade music career, Parton didn’t have a bad word to say about her family — especially her parents. It was Parton’s commitment to the Christian command “honor thy father and thy mother” that partially inspired her creation of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.
