Today’s teenagers are drinking earlier, staying out later and getting into more trouble than we ever did.

That’s often the consensus when chatting to fellow mums.

This week, I questioned this logic.

I came home to tell my husband, Jamie, a story I’d heard about ‘kids’ meeting up for drinks on a Friday night, exclaiming: “Can you believe it? Just a few years older than our boys. It’s so young.”

He smiled and said: “We were doing exactly the same, probably younger.”

There’s nowhere to hide when you marry the boy you went to school with from the age of five – your rose-tinted spectacles can be knocked off at any time.

Memory is a funny old thing. It softens the edges, tidies up the chaos.
