After 14 years as an attending anesthesiologist, I voluntarily signed up to sit in a testing center, silence my phone, and take another board exam. This time it's in obesity medicine. My friends think I've lost it. My husband has learned not to ask why the kitchen table is covered in highlighters and sticky tabs.
Here's what nobody tells you about reinvention. From the outside, it looks glamorous. From the inside, it looks like a middle-aged woman at a desk at 9 p.m., furiously scribbling notes about hormones and hunger signaling.
And yet, I'm loving it.
Why Go Back to School Now?
Obesity affects roughly 40 percent of adults in the United States, and it remains one of the most misunderstood, most stigmatized, and most undertreated conditions I see. When I went to medical school, we barely touched nutrition. GLP-1 medications weren't part of the conversation. Longevity was something you read about in magazines, not in textbooks.
Now my patients ask me about all of it. And I don't want to help them with a hot take. I want to help them with the evidence. So I study.
