Recently, you may have come across a new social media buzzword—exercise snacking. This trend has received praise on social media because it is time-efficient, effective, and has a low barrier to entry. As with any social media wellness trend, it’s important to look at whether the claims are supported by scientific evidence.

The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data from the years 2013 to 2023 indicate that an estimated 36-37 percent of Americans report prolonged periods of little to no activity—sitting for at least six hours per day or more (Li, S., and colleagues, 2025). Interestingly, physically active individuals, who generally meet national exercise recommendations, still spend large portions of their day sedentary. This rise in sedentary behavior highlights the growing need for practical, accessible ways to incorporate more movement into everyday life, even outside of traditional workout routines.
