Meditation: The Mental Edge You Didn't Know You Needed

Meditation sharpens cognitive skills, aiding learning and focus beyond just stress reduction.

Mindfulness meditation can perceptually slow time, helping rapid decision-making under pressure.

Neurologic changes from meditation enhance areas tied to memory, awareness, and emotion regulation.

Meditation is a mental training skill, successfully used regularly by high performers such as elite athletes, those in high-risk occupations, and corporate executives. Much of the meditation literature focuses on stress reduction and physical and mental health; however, meditation is so much more. Our highest performers have discovered that we can use it to hone our skills, learn more effectively, and improve our attentional and other cognitive abilities.

This is not to say that it isn’t an important component of complementary medicine (i.e., techniques used to complement traditional medical interventions). Meditation can augment treatment for both medical and mental health conditions by lowering stress reactivity, improving emotional regulation and mood, decreasing blood pressure, and helping to manage pain and chronic medical conditions.........
