The Island’s provincial Liberals got a brutal lesson in politics Monday. If you missed it – not much chance on P.E.I. where politics is second only to hockey in terms of sports people love to talk about – Tayte Willows of the Green party won Cornwall-Meadowbank in breeze.

The score (why not keep the hockey analogy going for another minute) was 1,184 to 995 for Liberal Leader Robert Mitchell. He promptly resigned. That’s a serious ouch. Conservative Caley McDonald was third with 823 votes.

The Tories can shrug at losing a seat they only recently managed to win for a change. You just get on with your day. That’s what you do when you have 18 seats. Nice cushion, that.

It’s not what you do when you’re the Liberals and you still only have four seats. And you weren’t able to regain what was long thought of as a Liberal stronghold during the Ronnie McKinley days.

The Greens? You dance a jig and do the wave in the hockey arena.
