CHEERS AND JEERS: Cheers to the City of Summerside for committing to new fire station
Cheers to Summerside City Council for moving ahead with the construction of the community’s much-needed new fire station. The city expects the project to cost about $11.5 million and will be splitting the cost over the next two years. The recent 2026-27 budget set aside $5.5 million for it. The municipality’s current Station 1 fire hall on Foundry Street has served the community well since 1962, but it is long-past time for it to be replaced. Construction of the new fire station is expected to begin later this year on a site off the newly opened Cairns Boulevard with capacity to expand for the growing city. It will also feature an important modern decontamination system for firefighters and equipment. There will also be living quarters which can house firefighters in comfort when they are required to be on station overnight, a fully equipped gym and some on-site training facilities. Volunteer firefighters help keep us safe; we should always strive to do the same for them.
