TRAI tightens spam call rules: AI to detect offenders, action after just 3 complaints
TRAI has introduced stricter rules to tackle spam calls and unwanted messages in India. The amendments bring AI-based detection, faster action against repeat offenders, restrictions on automated calls and a new appeal process for consumers.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has introduced new rules to tackle spam calls and unwanted commercial messages. Announced on September 18, 2026, the amendments bring AI-based detection into the regulatory framework, tighten checks on automated calls and give consumers a way to appeal if they are unhappy with how their spam complaints are handled.
The changes amend the Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulations, 2018. TRAI had released the draft amendments for consultation on March 13, 2026. The regulator says the revised framework will help telecom companies identify suspected spammers earlier and take action against those misusing mobile numbers.
