“Violence is not the path to achieving peace.” This is what we are hearing, mainly from the left, about the U.S./Israel-led attack on Iran. I believe diplomacy and peace are preferred to violence and war, but sadly, sometimes force is the only way stop very bad people. When confronting absolute evil, we must never forget the lessons of the Holocaust.

Had Adolf Hitler been stopped sooner, he would not have slaughtered six million Jews. In all, Hitler’s war, infused with a hateful ideology ground in supremacism, led to more than 50 million deaths in the Second World War. Death on a massive scale is what we could have expected from a nuclear-armed Iran driven by religious superiority and hate against Judeo-Christian values. After 47 years of chaos and terrorism, like Hitler, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei got what he deserved.

For decades, Iran rejected the path to peace, opting for a path of death and destruction through the development of ballistic and nuclear missiles. It rejected America’s overtures to negotiate an agreement. According to U.S. envoy and negotiator Steve Witkoff, Iranian officials openly asserted their intention to enrich uranium at levels sufficient to produce 11 nuclear weapons. “They weren’t hiding it. They were proud.”

While negotiating with the U.S. over these past two months, Iran continued to rape and murder its own citizens, killing as many as 32,000 innocent people since the start of the year. If they could mass-murder their own citizens, imagine what they would do to all of us with a nuke. But even this basic thinking doesn’t move the needle for UN Secretary-General António Guterres, who recently congratulated Iran on marking its 1979 revolution.
He was quick to condemn the attack. “The strikes by the U.S. and Israel against Iran … undermine international security.” For decades, the UN failed to curtail Iran’s nuclear ambitions and global terrorism. Instead, Iran was recently appointed to vice-chair the UN Commission for Social Development. In 2023 it was appointed to chair the UN Human Rights Council and let’s not forget, in 2023 it was also elected as one of the vice-presidents of the UN General Assembly.
Iran needs to be stopped once and for all. It is the largest sponsor of terrorism. It has sworn the death of America and Israel. It has funded terrorist proxies including Hezbollah, Hamas and the Houthis. It has conducted terrorism operations around the world including the bombing of the Israeli embassy and a Jewish community centre in Argentina in 1992 and 1994 respectively. The October 7 Hamas attack on Israel was the result of years of planning involving Iran, who trained and funded Hamas, while creating a “ring of fire” surrounding the Jewish State.
Iranians themselves have been pleading for help from world leaders. In Canada, hundreds of thousands of Iranians poured onto our streets in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and in between. That’s why Canadians are confused by our government’s incoherent messaging. Prime Minister Mark Carney told the United Arab Emirates this week that “Canada has long supported the imperative of neutralizing” the Iranian threat. But at the same time, he implored “all parties, including the United States and Israel, to respect the rules of international engagement” and de-escalate hostilities.

So, which is it Canada? Should we help the Iranian people and secure the future of the world from a dangerous regime that proved itself able to commit mass murder, or find a “political solution” as Carney implores, leaving the regime in power?
I echo Iranian human rights advocate Nazanin Afshin-Jam’s appeal to Carney and Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand this week: “Now is not the time to waver. I was proud to read your statement supporting the U.S. and Israeli mission to confront the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism, a regime with well-documented nuclear ambitions and a human rights record that the UN has described as crimes against humanity … If your government is reconsidering its position, Canadians deserve to know: what is the strategy now?”
Iran has been a menace to the world for too long. It has refused to negotiate in good faith. It has threatened to wipe out America and Israel. It has continued to build ballistic missiles while developing nuclear weapons. It has slaughtered its own citizens. This is the time to restore peace in the Middle East by forcing conditions on the ground for regime change. The people of Iran and its neighbours deserve a better future. We all deserve a better world. This is a moment in history we shall never forget.
