Delegation Isn’t a Productivity Problem. It’s an Identity Problem
High performers don’t struggle to delegate because they lack the right system. They struggle to let go of the identity they built around being indispensable.
EXPERT OPINION BY LEIGH ELENA HENDERSON, FOUNDER, HRMANIFESTO
Every article about delegation treats it like a productivity problem, a matter of better systems and clearer checklists, and I understand why, because that framing is comfortable. It implies the fix is tactical. In my experience, the real reason high performers struggle to delegate has almost nothing to do with systems and everything to do with the fact that they spent years being the person everyone could count on to just handle it, indispensable by default rather than by design, until their whole professional identity got built around never letting anything drop.
I’ve coached new managers, freshly promoted out of individual contributor roles where they were the best........
