The historic weather system, caused by Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW), brought up to 25cm of snow to the county in February and March of that year, with temperatures plunging as low as -5C.

Despite its name, SSW can bring bitterly cold conditions and the Met Office has warned that this year’s record-breaking El Niño could mean we see the phenomenon again this winter.
