Eleanora Folan - a self-described “mentally ill”, “proud anti-Zionist trans woman” - had been voted in as the female representative for East Anglia on the party's highest ruling body last month.

This body is responsible for the Greens’ national governance and strategy, including in Norwich, where the party holds a majority under leader Lucy Galvin.

However, the election of the transwoman - a man who identifies as a woman - prompted accusations from gender critical party members that the result contravened last year's Supreme Court ruling that "woman" and "sex" in the Equality Act 2010 referred to biological sex.

The Greens confirmed the campaigner had been suspended as a party member and therefore from the role on the governing council, but insisted its elections "act within the law".

The party refused to explain the reason for the suspension and said it does not comment on disciplinary matters.
