As more employers require employees to spend additional days in the office, it’s important for organizations to consider how their workplaces are designed to better support workers, according to Matthew Kobylar, principal and design director at Gensler Canada.

The issue has gained renewed attention following a report by the Public Service Alliance of Canada that found many federal public servants are returning to offices with insufficient workstations, meeting rooms and quiet spaces. While the report focuses on the federal public service, it underscores a broader challenge facing employers as more organizations expand return-to-office requirements.

“Employees expect the workplace to offer a variety of spaces to suit various work modes — it’s about giving them the freedom to choose how and where they work,” says Kobylar. “You’re sitting on a potential bomb when these people come back to the office and suddenly the experience........
