Former federal public servant seeks better pensions for injured workers

A former public servant is calling for changes to pension rules for workers who have to retire early after getting injured on the job.

Paméla Marchand worked for Correctional Service Canada as a corrections officer for 15 years before her medical retirement at age 39. After she experienced harassment by colleagues, a psychological injury forced her to leave her job.

Marchand said the situation deprived her of the opportunity to continue her career and reach 25 years of service, which is when frontline workers can retire without penalty. She said she lost salary increases and career progression and missed out on the pension she would’ve received after a longer career.
