The outcry about homeless encampments has sharpened considerably this summer. Hard questions are being asked of Premier Wab Kinew and Mayor Scott Gilligham, and it’s their fault, because the public was assured the ‘Your Way Home’ strategy would reduce the number of encampments in riverbank neighbourhoods. Instead, we have more than ever, and the continuing spread of filth, garbage, used needles, and social disorder has those neighbourhoods clamouring for relief.

“We need an end to policies that normalize decay, danger, and disorder,” North Pt. Douglas homeowner Howard Warren wrote them last week. “And we need city and provincial leadership to stop pretending this is okay. We need all of this now.”
One of his criticisms is the decision by both levels of government to prop up the Main Street Project into a lead role on the homelessness file, even though the group “appears to encourage encampments and advises people to stay where they are, sometimes even assisting with setup.”
“To me, and many others, St. Boniface Street Links represents the true human rights approach,” Warren stated.
“They believe that every person deserves a roof over their head, treatment for addiction and mental health challenges, and the chance to rejoin society with dignity and support.”
