CURRIER: The World Order Is over — and it isn’t coming back

Say what you will about Mark Carney, he is correct in what he says about the world order shifting. The world order which emerged from the ashes of the Second World War served, with some notable exceptions, reasonably well for some seventy years. That order is gone, and like the coal mining jobs Donald Trump has promised, it’s not coming back.

Treaties and international laws mean as little to Donald Trump as they did to Adolph Hitler in 1936 when he violated the Treaty of Versailles and seized the Rheinland.

Freedom and democracy are losing ground to dictatorships in China and Russia. Brutal governments in North Korea, Eritrea, Belarus, Gabon and Niger receive little notice in Canada but they persist.

What’s not uncertain is that American foreign policy has been turned on its head. In his first term, Donald Trump was all about bringing troops home and keeping America within its own borders. But, like so many of the things he........
