Parshat Nitzavim contains one of the most celebrated declarations in the Torah: “It is not in heaven…nor is it beyond the sea…. This word is very close to you” (Deuteronomy 30:12–14). For generations, commentators and halakhists have heard in these verses a bold assertion about the nature of Torah itself — that once given, it belongs not to the heavens but to us. As we shall see, the haftarah from the Book of Isaiah deepens that assertion, clothing it in the imagery of joy, marriage and eternity. Together, the parsha and haftarah invite us to reconsider what it means to be partners, not merely recipients, in the divine covenant.

Nowhere is this more dramatically illustrated than in the famous Talmudic episode of the Oven of Akhnai (Bava Metzia 59b). A halakhic dispute erupts between the community of sages and Rabbi Eliezer. Rabbi Eliezer demonstrates miraculous signs to support his position. A heavenly voice even intervenes to support him. Yet the majority of the sages refuse to accept it, invoking the very verse from Nitzavim we have quoted above: “It is not in heaven.” The ruling goes against the divine demonstration.
