The GMF 140 frigate is intended to strengthen European naval capabilities—but it could find buyers in North America as well.

Rheinmetall unveiled a new guided-missile frigate designed to succeed in the modern naval battlefield on Monday—part of the German defense giant’s effort to diversify its offerings beyond land vehicles.

Named the GMF 140, this multi-purpose warship design is sure to interest several NATO navies. Rheinmetall also hopes to make inroads in the North American market, where the US Navy has struggled to field a new frigate for more than a decade and increasingly looked abroad for shipbuilding partnerships.
