Conservative ‘Squawk Box’ host tussles with Scalise over gas prices 

A conservative TV host pressed House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) on Thursday about rising fuel prices across the U.S. as the war in Iran stretches past 60 days.

The average cost of gas has skyrocketed amid the ongoing conflict, hitting the highest level in four years on Tuesday. The national average as of Thursday morning is $4.30 per gallon, according to AAA. 

Scalise attempted to downplay these rising costs, telling “Squawk Box” host Joe Kernen to compare the prices with those under the Biden administration.

“We’ve delivered,” he said, referring to Republicans’ economic policies. “People will remember that two years ago, we were paying almost $6 a gallon for gas. Right now it’s $3.”

Kernen pushed back on the Republican leader, pointing out that these numbers did not reflect the median fuel costs from 2024. The average price of a gallon of standard gas in 2024 was $3.30 per gallon, peaking at $3.67 in April of that year.
