Ex-federal prosecutor on Jack Smith developments: ‘This is preposterous’

Former federal prosecutor Andrew Weissmann called House Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan’s (R-Ohio) recommendation of criminal charges for former special counsel Jack Smith “preposterous.”

In an interview on MS NOW with Jen Psaki, Weissmann added, “You cannot read this letter and in any way view this as perjury.”

He was referring to Jordan’s accusation that Smith made false statements to Congress when he was deposed late last year about his investigation and prosecution of President Trump. During the hearing, Smith was asked whether he had subpoenaed the text messages of members of Congress, which he denied.

Smith did review the texts of lawmakers but received the messages through the White House. Jordan did not think Smith was candid enough and is recommending the prosecution of the man who led the criminal cases against President Trump.
