Warren backs El-Sayed in Michigan Senate race

Progressive Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) on Monday endorsed Abdul El-Sayed in the Michigan Senate Democratic primary, five days before early voting in the race begins.

Warren, who previously backed state Sen. Mallory McMorrow (D) before she dropped out of the race earlier this month, cited El-Sayed’s support of Medicare for All, unions and taking corporate money out of politics in supporting him over moderate Rep. Haley Stevens (D-Mich.).

“He is the fighter Michigan needs in the Senate. Michinganders deserve a senator who will fight for you, not for special interests running millions of dollars in TV ads to buy this seat,” Warren said in a video she posted to social platform X, referring to spending in the race by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, affiliated groups and other outside entities.

Early voting in the primary starts Saturday and runs through Aug. 2, with the final day to cast a ballot falling on Aug. 4. Michigan has open primaries, which means voters can cast a ballot in the Democratic race no matter their party........
