$2.5 billion Amazon settlement: More payments being sent out, with another round possible

(NEXSTAR) – More — and larger — payments connected to a $2.5 billion settlement Amazon reached with the Federal Trade Commission last year may soon be available, according to officials.

The settlement came last year after Amazon was accused of using “deceptive methods” to register millions of customers for paid Prime subscriptions, then making it difficult for those customers to cancel. Amazon did not admit wrongdoing.

Of the $2.5 billion involved in the settlement, $1.5 billion was to be used on customer refunds.

Some impacted consumers received automatic payments late last year as part of the agreement. Another group had to complete a claims process. At the time, the FTC said payments were capped at $51, but could be less than $1.

Now, following a joint motion from the FTC and Amazon, “millions” more are now eligible for automatic payouts, and another round of payments may be sent out.
