Data Center Debate Draws Contrast Between Democrats and GOP in Georgia

Data centers are shaping politics and elections across the country, but that is especially true in Georgia, which has a critical gubernatorial election and a Senate race that could determine the balance of power in Washington.

Democrats and Republicans are scrambling to solidify their policies toward data centers in the Peach State. Their approaches and the policy implications that follow could prove critical come Election Day.

Recently, Sen. Raphael Warnock, D-Ga., announced his support for a statewide data center moratorium. Warnock came out in support of the moratorium after visiting the location that OpenAI is preparing for a large-scale data center in Effingham County, Georgia.

While Warnock said he would allow certain exceptions to this moratorium, the office of Gov. Brian Kemp and others believe different policy approaches could be better suited to serve Georgia communities and the Georgia economy.

Warnock and Kemp will not be on the ballot this November, but both men are critical players shaping how their parties respond to data centers.

Kemp’s Data Center Strategy

Annalise Morning, the deputy press secretary and digital media manager for Kemp, discussed the governor’s position on a moratorium in an email to the Daily Signal.
