The 5 best new hotels in the world for 2026, ranked

From gilded Venetian palazzos to lavish Kyoto retreats and Alpine hideaways, these new hotels put opulence at the heart of the experience

Opening a hotel is easy. Opening one that earns immediate critical attention is considerably harder. The gap between a property that impresses on paper and one that delivers a genuinely exceptional guest experience is wider than most hospitality projections account for, and the hotels that manage to clear that bar in their opening year tend to share a few qualities: an architectural vision that extends beyond surface aesthetics, a culinary program treated as an equal partner to the rooms, and a site chosen not for its convenience but for what it makes possible. The five hotels below cleared all three, and in most cases cleared them by a margin that makes the achievement hard to attribute to luck or timing alone.

The properties span four countries and three continents, so the qualities they share aren't geographic. A converted U.S. Embassy in Mayfair, a machiya-inspired ryokan in a Kyoto geisha district, an Alpine ski resort in Big Sky, Montana, a restored 19th-century chateau in Luxembourg, and a new Venetian landmark on Giudecca Island all made the list not because of their addresses but because of the judgment applied to each one. Great hotels in 2026 treat their location as a set of obligations: obligations to the landscape, to the architectural heritage, and to guests who could have stayed anywhere and chose not to. Meeting those obligations requires decisions made years before the first guest arrives and commitments most developers walk back when budgets tighten; the properties below reflect the quality of those decisions at every level of the guest experience.

The 5 hotels below appear in the Michelin Guide, covering the nominees for the 2026 Michelin Opening of the Year Award, selected by Michelin Inspectors from new openings across the globe.

Airelles Palladio Venice opens on Giudecca Island, directly across the Giudecca Canal from St. Mark’s Square $SQ NaN%, and offers a view most visitors to Venice never find: the city’s defining landmark, seen from a position of calm. The hotel marks the first Airelles property outside France, and its debut on the Venetian hotel scene follows a multi-year restoration that was completed in spring 2026. The result is a property that delivers the architectural heritage and canal-city atmosphere that define Venice at its best, while leaving the tourist congestion on the other side of the water.

The restoration preserved historical details throughout the property while integrating them with contemporary design, a balance that Venice’s preservation standards demand and that many hotels in the city fail to execute convincingly. What separates Airelles Palladio from comparable Venetian properties is something rarer still: extensive landscaped gardens. In a city where outdoor space is measured in square meters and fiercely competed for, the gardens represent a luxury no renovation budget alone can create. They require land, and land on Giudecca is finite.

The culinary program........
