A Wall Street Journal article with the headline: “Are Therapists to Blame for the Rise of Adults Cutting Off Their Parents?” is circulating widely online and on social media. While the headline is certainly juicy and, no doubt, effective clickbait, there are some inherent problems with the implication that therapists are culpable for a rise in family estrangement.

To be fair, the article attempts to show both sides of the story, despite its less-than-flattering headline, including mentioning that, according to a therapist and professor of family social science, it “should be the tragic exception that you cut off a parent or loved one, not business as usual in therapy.” However, the article also positions therapists as a large part of the issue, claiming that........
