AI Is Making Everyone's Ideas the Same
AI is slowly killing human creativity.
In today's world, you must rely on yourself to come up with great ideas.
Uniquely human qualities, like humor, empathy, and courage, can help people stand out amidst the AI slop.
If you pull up the last five proposals that landed on your desk, or the last five emails you sent, or that paper you were asked to write about market conditions, they may look slick. They may be polished. They may look focused, organized, and sophisticated.
You may even think that you are getting the hang of all this AI at work. And your confidence may be soaring. Yet something lies just beneath the surface.
Your work has never looked better, and it has never looked more alike. You can’t tell what your work is apart from what someone else’s work is. That’s the thing with AI.
AI makes everything look more or less the same.
My research has led me to a 2024 study in Science Advances: Anil Doshi of University College London and Oliver Hauser of the University of Exeter asked 300 people to write short stories.
Some got story ideas from AI, and some did not.
The AI-assisted stories were judged more creative, and the writers who started out least creative gained the most.
But here is the kicker: Those stories were also more similar to one another!
