Parenting a Neurodivergent Child: Focus on the Journey, Not the Race

I've written at length about giving yourself grace and managing expectations when parenting a neurodivergent child. Recently, I gave myself this same reminder and wanted to share the experience with you.

I love races. Not the kind on four wheels, but the ones where I walk or run with friends, family, coworkers, or sometimes, solo. It's my form of self-care, and I've competed in endless 5Ks, 10Ks, and even the NYC Half-marathon—three times! No, I'm not fast—sometimes I'm in the last group to finish—but I have friends who have won prizes for being at the top of their age group. I focus on finishing, and when I do, you can bet I'm really proud. I truly believe anyone who races should win a prize. It is not easy to keep moving for four or more hours straight, and I've done it for 13.1 miles through the streets of NYC! Where is my pretty, shiny medal?
