CHEERS AND JEERS: Jeers to the City of Charlottetown for inaction on pothole-riddled roads

Jeers to the City of Charlottetown for allowing roads the public regularly uses to fall into disrepair — no matter who owns the surrounding land. At issue are connector roads to Charlottetown’s shopping malls and plazas that have become popular thoroughfares and traffic relief measures between publicly owned city streets. The developers built them to access their projects but now that they are falling into disrepair due to the constant traffic, there is a question about who is responsible for their upkeep. The potholes on John Yeo Drive are so bad, for example, the city talked about closing it, and it seems someone, perhaps the landowner, has barricaded it with Jersey barriers. Mayor Philip Brown told The Guardian the city would only look at taking over John Yeo Drive once improvements were made to it, but there is no sign that is going to happen any time soon if ever. Meanwhile, motorists have lost access to a viable shortcut and there seems to be no policy for the city to maintain any of these roads nor an enforcement mechanism to make the landowners do it.
