A dose of the equality Gloria fought for

Millburn, N.J.: Re “Activist and icon” (Sept. 4): As in all theaters, and even more so at the off-Broadway show “Gloria: A Life” (Gloria Steinem’s autobiography), the women’s line to the bathroom was infinitely longer than the men’s. The male bathroom attendant called to me: “You can use the men’s room.” The man at the front of the line was surprised and confused, stuttering, “Wait, will I be able to still use the urinal?”

“I won’t look, I promise,” I said. Hesitantly, the man said OK, probably thinking he’d never see me again. I bee-lined past him. After making it to the safety of the stall, we intimately tinkled together. When it was finally quiet and the coast was clear, I came out, and we chit-chatted at the sink about liberating the men’s room while we washed our hands in tandem. We smiled, introduced ourselves and parted ways, walking separately up the steps into the theater.

I climbed up to my seat. Reading my Playbill, I looked up to see my pee partner coming to sit beside me. As Gloria would’ve liked, I arrived to my seat first because of equal-opportunity bathroom access for men and women, and a deeper human connection was formed out of fairness. As I sat with Vikram watching “Gloria: A Life,” I felt grateful to Steinem that equality everywhere, including in the men’s room, was possible.

Bronx: The way things are going with the Supreme Court and the rulings it’s making, even if they are unconstitutional, we can not depend on it to protect the American people. I suggest we rename it the Donald J. Trump Supreme Court.
