Five years after Canada’s deadliest climate disaster, we're headed in a dangerous direction

The 2021 Heat Dome claimed 619 lives in BC, wreaked havoc on the provincial healthcare system and unleashed devastating wildfires that reduced the town of Lytton to ashes.

Five years later, we’re heading into another summer of record-breaking heat and wildfires and Prime Minister Mark Carney is fanning the flames by granting Big Oil’s every wish.Over the last year alone, Carney has walked back or watered down every major federal climate policy — from the oil and gas pollution cap to the clean electricity regulations and industrial carbon pricing. Even anti-green washing legislation that was put in place to protect the public from manipulative propaganda has been eliminated. 

This deregulation seems designed to facilitate the expansion of fossil fuel extraction, best illustrated by the creation of the Major Projects Office headed by the former CEO of the Trans Mountain Pipeline, Dawn Farrell. As far as we can tell, this new federal body is built to fast track destructive mega-projects under the guise of so-called “nation building.” 

But what really tops it all off is the recent Memorandum of Understanding that Carney signed with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith. This MOU surpasses what even the most nefarious Big Oil barons could have dreamed of.
