The best machine operator in the plant — fastest job changeovers, least amount of downtime, best quality — had to be off work for two months. As an apprentice with some amount of training but very little actual experience, I had to replace him.
I was nervous. I felt intimidated. There was no way I could fill his shoes; the comparison in skills would be clearly evident, and stark.
So I focused on what I could do. I could be more helpful to other operators. I could work through lunch to do preventive maintenance that might translate to fewer mechanical breakdowns. I could look at upcoming work and suggest smart scheduling........
