It’s the 1950s obedient housewife vibe that really shocks when you see the picture.

It demands a double-take. There she is, Nicola Sturgeon, playing the dutiful helpmate to Michael Gove: man of the house, boss, patriarch, daddy.

It’s a publicity shot taken by The Times newspaper for the new Sky TV show The Wargame. 

Gove and Sturgeon play the part of Britain’s Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister respectively. 

In the picture, Sturgeon is smiling like some stay-at-home mum in a seventies sitcom as she fixes Gove’s tie.

It’s the quintessence of everything we were told by Sturgeon that she stood against - and plays right into the hands of her enemies.

Sturgeon can, evidently, do whatever the hell she likes these days. But the citizens of Scotland are equally entitled to comment on her behaviour - which is becoming less edifying daily. We’re now in shameless territory.

Legions of SNP supporters - particularly women - defended Sturgeon come hell or high water on the grounds that she was feminist to her marrow.

Well, is this what a feminist does? I can tell you that the women in my life who call themselves feminists would rather emigrate to Trump’s America than parade around in public straightening men’s ties. The picture looks like a still from Terry and June.

My grandmother was a teenage suffragette and my mother a 1970s Women’s Libber. I’m trying to imagine either........
