Daily China flights win a big deal for Scottish airport

The decision by the Chinese carrier to increase the frequency of its service at the Scottish airport to daily is a big deal, writes Business Editor Ian McConnell.

And the numbers highlight the scale of the achievement.

There was further significant good news on flights for Prestwick Airport this week.

The momentum of the airport, which has been owned by the Scottish Government since 2013, is eye-catching.

And it is great to see a long-term plan, pursued patiently by the airport’s management team, coming together so well.

The airport, known officially as Glasgow Prestwick, announced on Monday that Air China Cargo had increased its cargo service between Prestwick and Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport in China to a daily service from four times per week.

Air China Cargo began the Chengdu flights in November last year.

It launched direct flights between Guangzhou and Prestwick on June 2 last year, with the frequency of this service having increased from three to four times per week.

China Southern Air Logistics last May began flights between Guangzhou and Prestwick, at a frequency of four per week.

The latest increase in Air China Cargo’s flights, with the Chengdu service going daily, means there are now 15 flights a week from China to Prestwick.

In December, Prestwick Airport was able to unveil its sixth consecutive annual profit. Its operating profit was £3.5 million in the year to March 31, 2025, up by around £300,000 on the prior 12 months.

And Prestwick Airport at that stage also had a most encouraging update on the current financial year which ends this month.
