IN AMERICA: Justice Dunsel of the Supreme Court

I was watching a rerun of one of the original “Star Trek” shows some time ago when I heard a word that I thought was made up. You know, artistic license and all that jazz? The word was “dunsel,” and it was used during an episode where the Enterprise was part of an experiment to see if a program, powered by artificial intelligence, could run the ship in a combat situation.

Timely, no?

The program worked fine, and afterwards the folks in charge of Star Fleet congratulated the creator of the A.I. program on a job well done, and they also said congratulations to Captain Dunsel of the Enterprise.

When one of the crew says to Captain Kirk they weren’t aware of anyone named Dunsel onboard, Kirk explains that it’s a derogatory term meaning something or someone that is useless or unnecessary.
