Indonesia: The Church Under Scrutiny – OpEd

(UCA News) — In the past two months, three significant events within the Catholic Church in Indonesia have presented pressing challenges.

First is a controversy involving a priest in Maumere diocese who decided to be part of a team of lawyers for a nightclub owner, who is suspected of trafficking 13 women. The women were allegedly exploited before being rescued by a Church advocacy group, which later filed a police report.

Ironically, the priest — Father Ephivanus Markus Nale Rimo — is the chairman of Maumere diocese’s Commission for Justice, Peace and the Integrity of Creation. The businessman he supports was convicted and imprisoned in 2024 for assaulting female workers at another entertainment venue.

The priest is also the director of PT Krisrama, a diocese-owned company. Last year, eight Indigenous people were jailed for eight months after the priest complained they tried to take over the property claimed by the company.

Second is the controversy surrounding the resignation of Franciscan Bishop Paskalis Bruno Syukur of Bogor amid allegations of mismanagement. On Feb. 10, a group of lay Catholics held a rare candlelight vigil in front of the Apostolic Nunciature in Jakarta, demanding clarification from the Vatican about the unclear reasons behind the bishop’s decision.
