This Scholarship Is Rewriting Tamil Nadu’s Future – OpEd

That is how many students from Tamil Nadu’s most marginalised communities managed to study abroad on government support over nearly two decades before 2021. Not six hundred. Not sixty. Six. In twenty years.

Then something changed. A new scheme launched quietly, almost without fanfare. Nine students in its first year. Fifty is the next. Then a hundred, then a hundred and sixty, and now two hundred and thirty-one this year alone. Over 385 students in five years, backed by more than 36 crore rupees covering tuition, travel, and living costs in full. The contrast is not just striking — it is, frankly, embarrassing to everything that came before it.

Tamil Nadu’s Annal Ambedkar Overseas Higher Education Scholarship Scheme sounds, on paper, like the kind of initiative governments announce and then quietly forget. A press release, a ceremony, and a minister at a podium. What makes this one different is that it actually works — and more importantly, it keeps reaching further.

In its early years, the scheme drew mostly from Chennai, Kanchipuram, and Tiruvallur. Urban students with some existing advantages, already closer to the kind of networks and coaching that make foreign........
