Something’s been sitting on my chest all summer, heavy as anything.

I have cerebral palsy, and nearly five decades writing about this community for a living. I am not on AISH. I am not on ADAP. But I have sat across kitchen tables from people who are, watched what this summer has done to their faces, and I have never in all my years writing this column felt as let down by this province as I do right now.

Nobody sat down with them. Nobody asked. The Alberta Disability Assistance Program landed on 80,000 Albertans the way bad news always lands on people used to it — from a distance, delivered by someone who’ll never ration their own groceries because of it.

I think of the people I’ve known for 30, 40 years, who built modest, hard-won lives around knowing what would land in their account each month.

That’s the part that hurts worst. Not the policy. The quiet certainty, somewhere in a boardroom, that........
