The man in his 50s was arrested in New Road, North Walsham following reports of a man with a gun.

Armed officers could be seen at the home shortly after 8am this morning.

The suspect could be seen exiting the property and lacing his hands together behind his head as he was arrested.

The road was closed while police attended the incident, but it has since reopened.

One local woman, who does not want to be named, called the experience "unnerving".

She said she was in the area after doing the school run, and saw "lots of armed police and police cars, and shouting of 'armed police, drop the gun'."

The address is less than half a mile from North Walsham Infant & Junior School, Paston College, and North Walsham High School.

A Norfolk Constabulary spokeswoman confirmed a man aged in his 50s was arrested on suspicion of possession of an imitation firearm.

"He was taken to Aylsham Police Investigation Centre for questioning, where he remains. An imitation firearm has been seized by officers. No one was injured" she added.

One neighbour, who does not want to be named, recalled the moment officers raided the home.

She said: "I woke up because there was lots of shouting, I came out to see what was going on but they told me to go back inside.

"It's really sad, I didn't know him well."

Police officers remained at the scene on New Road to sweep up and dispose of broken glass as a result of the raid.

Another neighbour said: "I was up the road when it happened. It's really sad."

Locals reported the man had been behaving erratically in the hours before his arrest.
