Sonni Mason, 25, did not expect to be fighting crime in his homemade caped-crusader costume when he travelled to Norwich from London for a friend’s fancy dress birthday party on Saturday.

But the revellers found themselves taking on one of the city’s criminals when they chased down a handbag snatcher through the streets and flagged down a group of police officers for help.

The drama began in a queue outside a bar in Queen Street before some detective work led the Dark Knight to Tombland, where he scaled a wall outside the Cathedral to recover the bag.

But Batman's trademark grappling hook was replaced by a boost up from a friend after his homemade version, made from a recycled toilet roll, proved less than functional.

From party to police pursuit

Batman has a coterie of supervillains, from the maniacal Joker to the cunning Mr Freeze.

But the first face in Norwich's very own Batman’s rogues’ gallery was a random civilian who turned to crime after accusing two women of stealing a packet of cigarettes from him.
