Derelict hotel at centre of fraud investigation as council starts work to save it
Senior councillors at Great Yarmouth Borough Council are considering whether it should spend £250,000 on urgent works at the Star Hotel, as well as begin the process of compulsorily purchasing the site.
However, it has now emerged the building, based on the town’s North Quay, is at the centre of a fraud inquiry being investigated by Norfolk Police.

Council papers said: “The matter of potential fraudulent activity has been referred to Norfolk police and relevant national partners.
“The council is awaiting confirmation of whether any further action can be taken in relation to the ownership and sale of leasehold interests in the building.”
After the hotel shut down and was sold to new owners in 2020, individual rooms were sold off on long-term leasehold agreements.
